Is the traditional 12V system becoming a thing of the past for serious offshore cruisers? In our latest discussions with Luc Jurien, CEO of the Alubat Shipyard, we talk about why 48-volt electrical systems have become the new standard on board the complete range of Alubat’s aluminum sailboats.
We explore the advantages of the 48V system including weight and space savings by eliminating the need for separate battery banks for bow thrusters and windlasses, as well as reducing the size and gauge of wiring. There are also increased efficiencies with the 48 volt system, and a by replacing generators with large capacity alternators, we move even closer towards the ‘silent cruiser’ experience.
